Feedback: Belleville-Henderson Student Wins Spot On School Board

For Belleville-Henderson students, eighth period means rushing to environmental science or maybe a study hall.

But if you're looking for senior J.W. Allen, you'll find him in his office.

Yes, office.

"Being the FFA state president, I have a lot of reports and newsletters and mailings I've got to do," he said.

Allen, a senior at Belleville-Henderson, was elected to a position on the board of education by a 2 to 1 margin.

He defeated a man who has been on the board for nearly ten years.

"Everyone's just generous here. They stick to their word and they just believe in me, which speaks volumes and gives me the opportunity to serve them," said Allen.

He says it was his passion for the community that lead him to run and that's what got people excited.

"He's been there. He's experienced it first hand and I think he's going to use that experience to give people a different perspective and help improve things in this school," said Allen's teacher Tedra McDougal.

"It was just something I was passionate about so I decided it was time for some young blood - a perspective of walking the halls after state aid," said Allen.

Allen will be attending Cornell University in the fall, but he says his schooling won't interfere with his position on the board.

From there, he says he may consider a career in business or politics.

This all coming from a kid - well - a man, who wears a tie to school every day.
