Bird -- Unable To Fly -- Rescued From Tree

It wasn't your everyday rescue for members of the Canton Fire Department.

They received a call that a young bird, maybe a hawk or small owl, was trapped in a towering tree and unable to fly.
Riverside Drive resident Martha Burkum discovered one bird had fallen to the ground, another landed safely on her front porch, but a third remained trapped in the tree.

Fire officials brought in the ladder truck to try to rescue it.

"It took off on us and as he tried to fly, he landed right in the bucket with us and we brought him down without even having to touch him," said firefighter Erik Johnson.
The two birds are being turned over to a wildlife rehabilitator from Lake Placid, who will care for them until they can be released back into the wild.
