The Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg announced Wednesday that it has raised a record amount of money for the Bishop's Fund Appeal.

The goal was $1,275,000 and the diocese says it has exceeded that figure by nearly $23,000.

The money helps provide emergency assistance to families and individuals struggling to pay rent and heating costs, medical expenses and grocery bills.

"I join my prayers of gratitude with those of the many individuals and families of our North Country who, at a time of crisis and struggle in their lives, have benefited from such generosity," said Bishop Terry LaValley in a news release.

The diocese received contributions from more than 10,400 donors

Nearly 98 percent of the goal has actually been received with $52,400 in pledges yet to be fulfilled.
