Burglars Target Pizzeria ATM Using Cutting Torch

Burglars armed with cutting torches stole an unknown amount of cash from an automatic teller machine in Felts Mills early Monday morning.

(Editor's note: A number of readers and viewers contact 7 News to tell us that the tool likely used in this type of theft is referred to as a cutting torch, not a blow torch as we originally reported.)

It happened at approximately 1:20 a.m. at Dano's Pizzeria on Route 283 near Fort Drum.

State police said the intruders entered the vestibule of the business where the ATM is located and used the torches to open the machine.

However, the torches set off the sprinkler system, which prompted fire and police officials to respond to the scene.

Police said a witness saw three people and a black, four-door sedan in the area at the time of the burglary.

Investigators said this burglary is unusual because thieves typically steal the entire ATM instead of breaking into it on site.

The vestibule sustained smoke damage.

The restaurant wasn't damaged and was open for business Monday.

If you have any information about the burglary, call state police at 782-2112.
