Update: Man Charged In Tuesday Morning CrashA 20 year old man appeared in Town of Leray court Tuesday evening, after being charged in connection with an accident early in the day. Zachery L. Piche, Chaumont, was charged with criminal mischief, second degree; criminal possession of stolen property, fourth degree; and unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle. Piche was charged as deputies tried to sort out a tangle of events early in the day. The tangle began with shots fired and money taken, and ended in a car rolling over off Route 81. The driver of the car, Piche, was not seriously injured. After Piche was released from the hospital, deputies took him into custody. Here's why: There was a burglary early Tuesday morning at 'Nice n' Easy' store on Route 12E in Chaumont. Someone shot out the side door of the store, entered, stole cigarettes and money and while inside apparently fired a weapon back out, toward the front window and door. 7 News reporter John Moore counted at least nine apparent bullet holes in the front. Piche's car was identified as a 'vehicle possibly involved in the burglary.' Deputies spotted the vehicle in Brownville and started following it. The driver refused to stop, according to the sheriff's department, and even 'spike strips,' which deflate tires, failed. Piche ended up going south on Route 81 to Adams, turning around and going back north. He lost control of his car by exit 47 off Route 81, the Bradley Street, Watertown exit. It appears the vehicles involved got up to speeds of a hundred miles per hour or more, before police decided to break off the chase. The accident happened after police had ended the chase and were simply following the car, according to the sheriff's department. Detectives said none of Tuesday's charges were related to the Chaumont incident. (We have posted John Moore's 6 pm report with this story.
