Truck Rear-Ends School Bus Near Evans Mills

Twelve children from the Indian River School District were taken to area hospitals Wednesday morning after the bus they were in was rear-ended by a truck.

The accident happened about 7 a.m. at the intersection of routes 11 and 26 in the town of LeRay, just outside Evans Mills.

School officials say a bus with 21 middle school students was stopped at the stop light when it was hit from behind by a Syracuse Glass Company truck.

Jefferson County sheriff's deputies say the truck, driven by 30 year old Graig Mincer of Watertown, was unable to stop and hit the bus from behind.

Mincer was ticketed for following too closely.

The bus was driven by 47 year old Keith Carrio of Theresa.

Five students were taken to Carthage Area Hospital and seven to Samaritan Medical Center with what are believed to be minor injuries.

The remaining students continued to school. The damage to both vehicles is described as minor.

The state Department of Transportation is assisting deputies with their investigation.
