CBS News Crew Investigates Origins Of TI Salad Dressing

When it comes to figuring out the origins of Thousand Island salad dressing, CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Martha Teichner is finding out it depends on whom you ask!

"Everybody says their story is the true story and all we can do it navigate and hope for the best," said Teichner.

In this case, she's asking the owner of the Thousand Islands Inn, Alan Benas, who says he has the answer.

"We're using the original recipe that I've got and no one else does," said Benas.

Benas says the dressing was created more than 100 years ago by the wife of a fishing guide and passed on to the inn by a famous actress.

They've been making it at the inn ever since.

There are other stories about the origins of the dressing and Teichner and her crew have been all over the Thousand Islands to hear them.

"A lot of folklore for a salad dressing, a lot.  And it's kind of fun," said Teichner.

So why is Thousand Island dressing getting national attention now? 

CBS Sunday Morning is doing an island-themed show this week and Thousand Island salad dressing was the right ingredient.

"We've been hot on the trail of Thousand Island salad dressing," said Teichner.
