Campers Pack Local State Parks

Campers and tents line state parks this Memorial Day weekend.

And it's not just for the holiday.

Officials say park reservations are up 20 percent statewide this year.

"Actually, the great part about the 20 percent increase is that 50 percent of those increases are right here in the Thousand Islands region," said Kevin Keiff, State Office of Parks Regional Director.

"Just to have fun with friends and family. Third camping trip this year already," said camper Kathy Cook.

One reason for that was the warm spring we had, but another reason for increased attendance?

Officials say it's the economy.

"When the economy seems to take a dip, I think that's even more important to folks to find an opportunity to come out for anywhere from $15 to $25 a night and have a camp site for 6 people," said Keiff.

While the camp site may be inexpensive, that doesn't mean 'camping' is always cheap.

"Depends, we spend a lot of money. We do a lot of eating, drinking, you know," said camper Don Gill.

Still, camping does offer the chance to get out and enjoy the weather.

"You can ride your bikes around, you can play catch with people, you can play kickball," said camper Whyatt Parliament.

"Me and my sisters, we'll play lacrosse and stuff. And all of us out here will play soccer, or whatever. And we're just sitting by the fire and enjoy it," said camper Shelby Gill.

So, while finding a spot this weekend to camp may be tough, officials say there'll be plenty of good spots this summer.

Just make sure you call ahead.
