Canton Central To Lose 2 Dozen Jobs In Proposed 2012-13 Budget

Two dozen jobs will be cut from the Canton Central School District budget proposed for next year.

School officials say the job cuts include teachers, teacher assistants and other staff. Academic programs, such as advanced placement courses and other core programs, will remain intact.

Nine of those workers are retiring and their positions will not be filled.

The $23.2 million dollar spending plan for 2012-2013 goes before voters May 15. It carries a 4.6 percent tax rate increase, which keeps the district at the state tax cap limit.

A taxpayer with a home assessed at $100,000 - with a basic STAR exemption - would find him- or herself paying $61 more in school taxes next year.
