Canton Gas Leak Forces Evacuation

Tools

A break in a natural gas line on East Main Street in Canton Wednesday morning briefly forced the evacuation of two dozen homes and a St. Lawrence University administration building.

Canton Fire Chief Bob Crowe says construction crews working on the Route 11 reconstruction project accidentally ruptured the four-inch gas line at around 9:20 a.m. while they were digging near the intersection of Hillside Drive and East Main.

Crowe says 24 homes and the university's Vilas Hall were evacuated as a precaution until St. Lawrence Gas officials could turn the gas off.

Crews repaired the damage and people returned to their homes -- or to work -- within an hour.
