Canton's Retiring Police Chief Reflects On Long Career

It's not going to be easy for Canton Police Chief Alan Mulkin when it comes time to hang up the badge he has worn for the last 18 years.

Mulkin is retiring after more than two decades in law enforcement.
 
"There's a lot of good police work that gets done every single day that you just don't hear about," said Mulkin.
 
Whether it's dealing with an illegally disposed meth lab, heading investigations into more serious crimes like domestic violence, illegal drug activity and robberies, or just serving the community at large in other ways, Mulkin says when he put on the badge, he tried to do his very best.
 
"It's an extremely interesting job...Every day is a new adventure," he said. "Law enforcement has always provided me with a lot of great opportunities."
 
Mulkin began his career as a rookie cop in the village of Norwood before making his way to the streets of Canton. 
 
This week, Mulkin is slowly cleaning out his files for the last time, reflecting on his career. 

As he patrolled the village streets for one of the last times, we asked him whether he had any regrets.
 
"You have a vision for the department and sometimes that vision and those plans are literally taken away from you because they don't match up with what perhaps elected officials have in mind," said Mulkin.
 
Mulkin says he doesn't see his retirement as an ending, but rather a new beginning as he looks ahead to a career change at the parts counter of LeBerge & Curtis John Deere.
