Caps Off at Clarkson University

Some say a cap and gown is one of the most important outfits you will ever wear.  This year at Clarkson University in Potsdam, the traditional graduation garb had a very "green" twist.

This year, students donned "eco-gowns." The gowns are made of natural materials, not synthetic.

"When we say were sustainable, we want sustainability to be a part of everything we do," says Clarkson professor Susan Powers.

The caps and gowns feel like fabric, but they are actually made from recycled wood and plastic.  They will decompose in a few years, and many say that it's a much better alternative to crowding up a closet.

"It doesn't have a lot of uses, so if we can make sure it has a friendlier after-life, and it's friendlier in terms of how it was made, that would be a great thing for the environment," adds Powers.

Another plus to the gowns: they're produced petroleum-free.

"So much money is spent on energy and electricity.  I really think that it's important to look forward to the future in terms of how to conserve this energy," says Clarkson graduate Melissa Butkiewicz.
