Antwerp Man Dies When Vehicle Hits Horses

A 35 year old Antwerp man was killed when his car struck two loose horses in the road.

State police say Jacob Tyler was driving his 2012 Volkswagen Jetta on County Route 20 in the town of Philadelphia on his way to work early Monday morning when he struck the horses.

The horses, which belonged to a nearby Amish farm, were also killed.

The car ended up in the snowbank. A passerby saw the vehicle around 4:30 a.m. and called police.

Troopers say there was no sign Tyler was speeding along the dark road and that he was wearing his seat belt.

County Route 20 was closed between Elm Ridge Road to State Route 26, but has since reopened.

A helicopter was called in, but the pilot was later told he wasn't needed.

Troopers say no charges are expected against the horses' owner.
