"Causing a Scene" at Clarkson University
Playing tag. Having a balloon war. These aren't thing you typically see college students doing. Not until Friday evening at least. "Some crazy stuff happens here on campus, but this is pretty big," says Clarkson University student Christina Collins. On Friday, the founder of the prank collective "Improv Everywhere" paid a visit to Clarkson University. You may have seen Charlie Todd's social experiments on YouTube; the "No-Pants Subway Ride" and "Frozen In Grand Central" are two of his most popular. On Friday, students got in on the fun, taking part in an MP3 experiment. Before playing, students loaded a special MP3 file onto their MP3 players. Then, players showed up at a designated area at a specific time, and pressed play simultaneously. "What you end up having is a couple of hundred people today, and in New York City, sometimes thousands of people who are all in a public space together, doing coordinated activities, that their headphones are telling them to do," says Todd. For Todd, it's a chance to spread his message. "Everything that we do in this life doesn't have to have a larger purpose behind it. Sometimes, it can be like, "you know what it would be really fun to listen to the same MP3 track and do some silly, carefree, childhood type games together," says Todd. And for students, it's a welcome break, at the perfect time. "Right before finals, you got to go out and unwind, just kind of run around on a beautiful day. It was great," says Clarkson University student Kyle Metarko Proof that making a scene can, in fact, be a good thing.
