Celebrating Earth Day

The New York State Zoo at Thompson Park in Watertown held its first ever Earth Day celebration Saturday.

Despite the rain, kids packed the zoo learn about conservation and for the chance to see some cool animals.

Children were also able to do some arts and crafts, but with a twist. All the materials used were made out of recycled products.

"It's to show kids that they can actually repurpose the trash and have fun with it and create toys, rather than just discarding them away," said John Wright, the zoo's director.

Officials say they plan to hold more events like Saturday's throughout the spring and summer.

Also in honor of Earth Day, the town highway department in Clayton opened its doors to give people the chance to get rid of hazardous materials in an environmentally responsible way.

People were allowed to discard everything from dangerous chemicals to old computers.

There will be five more events like this all over the north country in the coming months. The next one will be May 12th in Canton.
