Chaumont Man Now Charged In Store Shooting, Burglary

A 20 year old Chaumont man, who was allegedly involved in a high speed chase and accident, is now accused of firing a shotgun at a convenience store and burglarizing it.

Zachery Piche is now charged with felony counts of second-degree burglary and third-degree criminal mischief.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, Piche used a stolen 12-gauge shotgun to shoot a glass door and windows at the Nice N Easy convenience store on Route 12E in the town of Lyme on Tuesday.

Officials said Piche stole cash, coins and cigarettes.

The shooting caused more than $700 worth of damage, officials said.

On Tuesday, Piche was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle.

Piche was arrested Tuesday after allegedly leading deputies on a high-speed chase.

The car he was driving was identified as a 'vehicle possibly involved in the burglary.'

Deputies spotted the vehicle in Brownville and started following it.

The driver refused to stop, according to the sheriff's department, and even 'spike strips,' which deflate tires, failed.

Piche ended up going south on Route 81 to Adams, turning around and going back north.

He lost control of his car by exit 47 off Route 81, the Bradley Street, Watertown exit.

It appears the vehicles involved got up to speeds of a hundred miles per hour or more, before police decided to break off the chase.

The accident happened after police had ended the chase and were simply following the car, according to the sheriff's department.
