Search Called Off At Waddington Beach; Everyone Ok

A search of the waters off Waddington's town beach Thursday afternoon was called off after officials determined no one was missing.

The St. Lawrence County dive team entered the water early in the afternoon after a lifeguard suspected a child was missing.

The call came in at 1 p.m.

According to Mark Smutz, dive master for the St. Lawrence County team, several children were jumping in the water from a floating dock.

Officials said a lifeguard saw bubbles and ripples on the surface and became concerned that a child was in the water and in trouble.

Even though groups of children at the beach were all accounted for, officials initially feared a child came to the beach on his or her own, which is why they started the search.

However, Russell Strait, who runs the town's recreation programs, said shortly after 3 p.m. that officials had determined no one was, in fact, missing.
