City Council Questions Parks & Rec Superintendent Hiring ProcessMonths after scandal hit the Watertown parks and recreation department, officials are still looking for a superintendent. After major billing errors were uncovered, city officials came up with a plan to restructure the department. Part of that plan is to hire a new superintendent and that is taking time. City Manager Mary Corriveau says although the process to hire a new superintendent has taken longer than expected, things are still on track. But 7 News has learned at least one person was offered that position and turned it down. City Councilwoman Roxanne Burns says there may be more who were offered and didn't take the job. "It's my understanding, again it didn't come from the manager, so I'm getting it second hand, it's my understanding there were two offers made to two separate candidates, both of them turned it down," Burns said. Members of city council want to know if there's a problem. The city manager counters, saying the hiring process is complicated. "It's process, it's procedure. It's putting together the processes and procedures and that's what's important going forward," Corriveau said. It's not just the position of superintendent creating confusion. Officials say the newly created manager position, a second in command, has yet to be filled despite qualified candidates applying. "I know of a couple of people who have applied and at least one person who applied who was told that they didn't have the qualifications and my understanding is they do," said Councilman Jeff Smith. |
