Clarkson Gives Sneak Peek Of Engineering Labs

Electrical engineering Professor Stephanie Schukers gets excited when she talks about her research.

For good reason - her new laboratory is almost finished.

Her new lab is one of six state-of-the-art research suites that will help Clarkson University faculty and staff find the intersection where biology and engineering meet.

"You can't stay still these days. The world is completely competitive...These kinds of facilities allow us to undertake cutting edge research," said Clarkson President Tony Collins.

The research produces products like a prosthetic, which bends at the knee to help amputees walk naturally.

The $4 million cost of the project was funded in part by the state.

"It was an opportunity to really support worthy projects that not only would help economically, but really are going to make contributions to society," said state Senator Joe Griffo (R. - 47th District).

The new facility not only allows students to work in the health sciences, but also in the science of security.

In order to separate individuals from imposters, Professor Schucker is using eye-recognition technology, heart rate monitors, and stop-motion cameras to collect data and produce mathematical formulas.

"As we move into this next century and we use more our electronics focusing on the secuity of that is one of the key, critical questions," said Schucker.

And that research Professor Schucker gets so excited about?

It's all technology we'll use in the future.

There's even a security program that tracks our typing patterns to help prevent fraud.
