Clayton Works To Make Sure There's Enough Parking

Construction the new Clayton Harbor Hotel is due to start in April on the old Frink site.

It's good news for Clayton's economy.

But the construction, along with two other projects this year, means parking in in the village will be at a premium.

Joe Gleason is executive director of the Opera House in Clayton, which is near the new hotel.

"There's concern during the construction phase that parking will be limited and our audience will have to park further away," he said.

So village and town officials have organized a parking committee.

That committee is finding extra room in existing lots and finding new lots to use this tourist season.

"We have to find some place to put our tourists conveniently so they can get to the merchants downtown and get to their cars conveniently," said Dennis Honeywell, a village trustee and member of the parking committee.

Even though the lots are a maximum of five minutes from downtown, the committee is exploring other ideas as well, like a trolley system, or valet parking at the area across from the opera house.

"We're just trying to make it a little more convenient and less painful. We certainly don't want somebody leaving town because they can't find a parking place," said Honeywell.

One of the things the parking committee is working on is re-striping existing parking lots to fit more vehicles in.

They know that this year, every space counts.
