Competitor Killed in Gouverneur Vintage Snowmobile Races

Police in Gouverneur say one person was killed Saturday at the Vintage Snowmobile Races at the Gouverneur-St. Lawrence County Fairgrounds in Gouverneur.

Gouverneur Police say it happened just after 3:00, during a circuit race involving several snowmobiles.

Officials say 53 year-old Donald Theriault of Fraserville, Ontario, Canada, was making a high-speed turn, when he hit a square hay bail that was being used as a barrier.  Theriault was thrown from the sled and was hit by another sled.

A second driver, 47 year-old John Altman III of Fulton, collided with Theriault and his sled.  He was ejected from his snowmobile.

Both men were taken to E.J. Noble hospital by members of the Gouverneur Rescue Squad, where Theriault was pronounced dead. Altman is currently in stable condition.

As a result of the accident, the remainder of the day's events were canceled.
