Concern Mounts Over Dogs Inside LaFargeville Trailer

Driving down County Route 180, you may miss them. But, two trailers there are becoming the talk of LaFargeville.

"There was zoning concerns at first, and then these two particular trailers came up during the board meeting," said Kevin Rarick, Town of Orleans Supervisor.

At that meeting, people told town officials they could hear dogs barking inside the white trailer, and they feared the dogs were being neglected.

"I'm a lifetime member of the Jefferson County SPCA," said Cindy Grant, "I'm here on my own just to say this isn't nice, it's not fair."

There is no evidence to support that claim. But Town of Orleans supervisor Kevin Rarick went to the trailers to try to figure out what was going on.

"Got near the building; they're actually dogs in the building," Rarick said.

The trailers co-owner, Eileen Coot verified that, telling 7 NEWS,  "all of the dogs are up to date on every shot, and they have food and water, and are let out once or twice a day."

However, Eileen and her husband Jean-Pierre have had run-ins with the law in the past. In 1999, the two had charges of failure to provide sustenance to animals at a residence in Potsdam dismissed.

But while Eileen says the dogs that live here are well taken care of, concern for their well-being remains.

Town officials have contacted authorities, but police say there is nothing they can do.

"They said that since the dogs were watered and fed, that there's absolutely nothing they can do," Rarick explained.

As for now, at least, this trailer will remain the talk of the town, and a place were dogs are kept inside for most of the day, everyday.
