Conditions "Perfect" For Ice Fishing

Between 500 to 600 people are expected for this year's Cranberry Lake Volunteer Fire and Rescue "First Strike" ice fishing derby this weekend.

Ice conditions are ideal for this year's derby with a thickness between 12 to 14 inches.

This marks the fourth year the derby has been held as a major fundraiser for the fire and rescue department.

Anglers and spectators from across the north country and beyond take part in the fishing derby.

Registration begins Saturday morning at 4 a.m. at the fire hall with fishing getting underway at 7 a.m.

This year, more $10,000 will be given away in prizes for adults and youths.

“We have absolutely perfect ice conditions with zero slush, over 12 inches of great ice, perfect for catching 20 pound pike,” said Bill White of the Cranberry Lake Fire Department.

In addition to Cranberry Lake, other fishing derbies will also be held Saturday in Black Lake and Alexandria Bay.
