Could Corriveau Stay On Longer As City Manager?

Watertown City Councilman Joe Butler was the third vote in favor of not renewing City Manager Mary Corriveau's contract.

But Butler says that doesn't mean he wants her gone right away.

"I've opened the door to a transition period. I have done that," he said.

This week found Corriveau hard at work on next year's budget.

With her contract up at the end of April, but the budget deadline at the beginning of June, Butler sees an advantage if she stays on longer.

"A transition period where we would be allowed to find a replacement if Mary chose to continue and retire at a later date. That transition period might possibly be more smooth," said Butler.

Mayor Jeff Graham says the budget process will go on, either way, with department heads and the city comptroller playing major roles.

But he says this will not be a year for micro managing.

"You rely on getting a professionally prepared budget, which I'm sure will happen under whatever circumstances, and you ratify it, and you move on with those other issues," said Graham.

But will Corriveau still be here in April, let alone beyond?

She could decide to leave early.

Corriveau said she "can't answer that question."

Right now, she's the only one who can.
