County Ponders Sheriff Department Investigation

There could be an independent investigation into the recent lawsuit filed against the Jefferson County sheriff's department.

The county Board of Legislators intends to discuss the matter in executive session during a special meeting Tuesday.

Deputy Krystal Rice has filed a $50 million sexual harassment lawsuit against individual members of the sheriff's department, including Sheriff John Burns.

The suit centers around photos that were allegedly taken of Rice for a pedophilia sting, that she says were misused.

It is unclear who would perform the investigation. Legislator Scott Gray says it is now up to the county to look into the matter.

"We have a legal department that has to litigate the matter," Gray said. "We're basically in charge of that, so the sheriff's department is where the action took place, in terms of that, it's really out of the hands of the sheriff's department at this point."

Burns declined to comment.
