Crowd Voices Opposition To Rezoning Plan

A standing room only crowd filled the Canton Municipal meeting Monday to voice displeasure over a controversial rezoning plan that could benefit three members of the town board, who either own property in or adjacent to the proposed areas.
 
The Town Planning Board is recommending changing zoning districts for nearly 4,500 acres of property along several town roads, including several acres owned by town Supervisor David Button and board members James Smith and Paul Backus.

The changes would include rural to residential, commercial and business.

Even though existing properties would be grand-fathered in, taxpayers argue the changes are too restrictive and unnecessary.

Button recused himself from the meeting after facing repeated questions from opposing taxpayers and those who questioned the motivation behind the changes.
 
The county Planning Board is against the changes.

A public hearing on the rezoning proposal is expected to be held in July.

Its approval would require a supermajority or 4 out of 5 vote by the town board.
