Cuomo Takes On State's Public Schools

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is picking a fight with what has long been Albany's most powerful force: public schools.

In his State of the State address, he says teachers' unions, school boards and school aid lobbyists are more interested in protecting teachers and administrators than they are in serving children.

The schools are shooting back, saying the Board of Regents is well-qualified to manage the state's schools.

They hope Cuomo seeks their input before taking on an overhaul of the education system.

It's not all rhetoric. Increases in aid hang in the balance as the state prepares for another lean budget year.
