DEC: 20 Dead Birds Were Poisoned

Tools

Officials have determined poison killed at least 20 birds outside a person's home in St. Lawrence County.

The starlings were found in early October in a backyard just outside the village of Massena.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation collected a couple of birds and sent them to a pathology lab.

DEC spokesman Steve Litwhiler said tests revealed the starlings ingested some kind of poison.

He said some pesticides have been ruled out.

Litwhiler said the DEC will continue to investigate to determine exactly what poisoned the birds.
