Deferiet Declares State Of Emergency Over Water Woes

There's a state of emergency in the village of Deferiet and residents are asked not to use any water outside their homes and to conserve water they use inside.

At an emergency meeting Tuesday night, the village board declared a state of emergency, which prohibits people from using any water outside, including watering lawns or gardens, washing cars, and filling pools.

In a news release, village officials said "We are urging residents to use caution when utilizing water inside the house.

"There's too many unknown factors here.  That's why we issued the state of emergency," said Mayor Robert Foster.

Officials say there is no need to boil the water. Tests are conducted daily to make sure the water is safe to drink.

Officials say residents can report an prohibited use of water by calling the village office at 315-493-2702.

However, it's a call that doesn't sit well with some residents.

 

"I'm not reporting none of my neighbors. I mean, that's their business," said villager William Eddy.

The problem, which started Saturday, is expected to be corrected by next Tuesday.

Foster says a new motor for the village's water pump is needed and the closest one is in Pennsylvania.

It needs to be shipped to Auburn, where it will be assembled.

Once it's put together, it will be brought to Deferiet.

With the holiday weekend, Foster says it's likely the motor won't be in place until at least next Tuesday.

Over the weekend, the village's pump on the back-up well stopped working while the pump on the primary water supply was being replaced.
