Apartment House Demolished; No Sign of CatA burned-out Watertown apartment building where a cat was thought to be trapped was demolished Tuesday. The High Street building was heavily damaged when it caught fire in May. It was condemned the day after the fire. A crowd was on hand for the demolition because some people believed a cat, "Stripey," that belonged to a family living in the apartment house, might still be inside. Stripey was spotted in the ruins the day after the fire. Work was halted Tuesday when one person spotted Stripey. Crew members searched the house one last time, but did not find the cat. "They made the attempt, but from now on if the cat's not seen by one of the workers, they're going to continue," said Shawn McWayne of the city's code enforcement office. "They stepped up to the plate on more than one occasion and I think a lot of these guys put their lives on the line looking for this cat this morning," said Katherine Barkley, who has worked with Stripey's family. "I'm very impressed," Barkley added. Stripey's owner was hopeful that somehow the cat will make it out alive. There were no further sightings of the cat as work continued Tuesday afternoon.
