Demolition is underway on a building on Watertown's Factory Street and it's a prelude to a major reconstruction project.

Crews are hard at work tearing down 429 Factory Street.

The building was falling apart and Watertown needs the site for a storm sewer line as part of a $6 million reconstruction  of Factory Street.

The owner donated the building to the city.

"Due to the structural failure of the building, it's being torn down," said Shayne McWayne of city code enforcement.

"That corridor that's going to be left there is going to be used by the city for the storm sewer when they redo Factory Street," McWayne said.

"It was a good deal for the city and the former owner of that building," he said.

Work on the sewer line and the rest of the Factory Street overhaul will start next summer.
