Tuesday afternoon update:  The search for a missing Massena snowmobiler who broke through the ice on the Grasse River Monday night has been temporarily suspended due to unsafe conditions.

Members of the St. Lawrence County Dive Team, Massena Fire and Rescue and air boats from Hogansburg-Akwesasne and Waddington spent Monday night and Tuesday morning focusing on hole in the middle of the river where the unidentified snowmobiler broke through.

State Police Sergeant James Lobdell told 7 News that state police divers are also being called in to assist once the search is able to resume.

The name of the missing snowmobiler was still not being released as of Tuesday afternoon.

What follows is our report from earlier in the day:

Searchers are looking for a missing snowmobiler who is believed to have drowned after he apparently broke through the ice on the Grasse River near Massena.

The unidentified man was last seen Monday afternoon when he left the Amvets boat launch on the Massena Center Road to go ice fishing.

He was traveling across the ice on his 1990 black Arctic Cat snowmobile.

Family members notified authorities when he failed to return home Monday night.

Divers, underwater cameras and sonar equipment are being used in the search, along with air boats from Hogansburg and Waddington.

Officials say the ice is about four inches thick in the spot where the snowmobile broke through, leaving a hole in the ice roughly four feet by eight feet..

"We had divers go out to the hole, where we had followed fresh tracks to a hole in the ice," said Massena Fire Chief Tom Miller, "and they recovered a glove and a cell phone at that time."

Officials are warning snowmobilers and others to stay off the ice as it may be unsafe due to the recent thaw.
