St. Lawrence County Jail Overcrowded

The St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility is full and 29 inmates are having to be housed in other jails outside the area.
The number of inmates being housed at the county jail stands at 186.

Jail officials say some inmates are also being double-celled.

As a result 23 male inmates are being housed out in Washington County while six females are being housed in Essex County.

Sheriff Kevin Wells says the overcrowded conditions are the result of several factors including more drug related arrests and a backlog of pre-sentence investigations being done on inmates by the probation department.

"We have too many held inmates which tells me that the system is not working in an efficient manner," said Wells.
The jail opened in 2009 with a capacity of 164 inmates but the state allows the county to house a maximum of 186 inmates.
