Earthquakes Felt In North Country

The St. Lawrence Valley region has felt some shaking and rattling after a couple of earthquakes.

The latest occurred around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday.

The 3.9 magnitude quake was centered near Montreal, Quebec.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, tremors was felt in parts of Ontario and in the north country.

There were some reports that the quake rattled windows and dishes.

On October 3, the U.S.G.S. reported a 1.7 magnitude earthquake occurred about 20 miles southeast of Potsdam.

"It's in what we call the western Quebec seismic zone," said Potsdam seismologist Frank Revetta.

"That zone extends down here to northern New York and that's a typical earthquake in that zone," he said.

Revetta says while earthquake activity in the region was relatively quiet over the summer, the latest tremors might indicate seismic activity could start to pick up.
