Engineer Says Factory Street Building Should Be Torn Down

Watertown City Engineer Kurt Hawk is recommending a downtown building be torn down.

Hauk says the building at 429 Factory Street is in such disrepair that it's "leaning heavily  to the east" and the back of the building is literally falling apart.

The city is planning a major overhaul of Factory Street and needs that site for a storm sewer line.

The city has asked the owner if he'd be willing to donate the building to the city and he agreed, officials say.

The city expects it will cost $36,000 to remove any asbestos and demolish the building.
