Equipment To Be Auctioned From Newton Falls Mill

Paper making machines and other equipment inside the idled Newton Falls Fine Paper mill are going on the auction block.
 
The century old paper mill hasn't been operating since 2010, when close to 100 workers lost their jobs.

Efforts to restart the mill fell through last August and the mill's owners, Scotia Investments, put the mill on the market.

Now, the owners are looking to auction off their inventory of equipment on March 21 in Syracuse unless a buyer is found for the mill before then.

St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency Executive Director Patrick Kelly says officials are working diligently to find a way to keep the mill intact.
 
"We want to avoid the negative impact on the community and on the county that an auction and permanent closure would bring. Our priority is to still work with the company to try and transition the facility to a new operator," said Kelly.
 
If the mill's papermaking equipment is liquidated, there are local concerns over how aggressive the Adirondack Park Agency and state Department of Environmental Conservation may be towards the owners in addressing potential contamination on the mill property.
