Family Is Proud Of 3 Generations Of Crime Fighters

It's not every day you can find three generations of a family with 80 years of combined law enforcement experience between them.

For retired State Police Investigator Larry Manor, whose son and grandsons also have close family ties to law enforcement, it's a gratifying legacy.

"It makes me feel real proud," said Larry.

The 81 year old Manor began his police career in Clinton County in 1953.

In the 36 years he spent as both a trooper and investigator, he has worked on everything from homicides and violent crimes to solving bank robberies and burglaries.

"I think probably there's more an element of danger now than there was when I was working," said Larry.

A lot has changed in law enforcement over the years.

There's new computerized technology, DNA advancements and more.

But for the Manor family, one thing has remained constant through the generations - experiencing people at their worst and treating them with respect anyway.

Retired Potsdam Police Sergeant Dan Manor Sr., now a chief investigator with the St. Lawrence County District Attorney's Office, says it was his father's work ethic that inspired him to first become involved in law enforcement.

"I got to work alongside Dad for nine years and we did work on some cases together," said Dan.

Dan's son and Larry's grandson, Trooper Dan Manor, says he knew from an early age he wanted to be an officer of the law.

"It means a lot to me with our family being in law enforcement since the 1950s. I feel like I'm continuing a tradition," said Trooper Manor.

The youngest of the Manor family, Michael, joined the State Police in April 2012.

He holds the family's honor of getting a perfect score on the trooper exam.

"It's definitely a brotherhood. It seems like everybody looks out for one another," said Michael.

As for whether the Manor law enforcement legacy will continue with future generations, that will be up to Larry Manor's great-grandchildren.
