Feedback: 13 Year Old Girl Hailed As Hero After Crash

Christan Cooper was driving on Water Street late Friday afternoon when she lost control of her Mercury Mountaineer.

"The next thing, I tried to push the brakes and I tried to steer it and the steering column just locked right up and the next thing you know we flipped into the river and we were going under," said Christan.

Christan and three other members of her family were in danger of drowning as the sports utility vehicle began to sink in the Black River.

She says it was her teenage niece, Lacie Thomas, who not only saved her life, but the life of her two year old son, Zachary Cooper.

"Lacey, my 13 year old niece, unhooked the baby's car seat and then unhooked the baby in the car seat. The baby floated up, I grabbed him, Lacie got out the window, then I got out with the baby and swam to the shore and I couldn't get up on shore, but Lacie pulled us up on shore," said Christan.

Christan says her 15 year old nephew, Anthony Jackson, was also in the car when it plunged into the Black River.

He followed the others in escaping from the vehicle and swimming to shore.

We're told he only suffered minor injuries.

After everyone was out of the water, Lacie was taken to Samaritan Medical Center.

7 News spoke with her on the phone Friday night.

She says she's okay and she's glad everyone else is too.

"A lot of credit goes to that 13 year old little girl," said Justin LaJoie, Christan's brother-in-law.

A towing company fished the submerged vehicle out of the water several hours after the accident.

The family is saying it's a miracle they survived an accident that could have had a terrible ending, but was turned around by a hero that was only 13.
