Feedback: Local Man Targeted In Craigslist Scam

Don Rohr was just trying to sell a set of tires from his Chevy truck. 

He asked for $300 on Craigslist, but when he got a check for $2,510 in the mail, he had a feeling something was up.

"If it looks too good to be true, it's, uh, you know," said Don.

Along with the check, Don received a list of instructions from the buyer. 

He was to cash the check, take $400 for himself, then send the seller the difference, $2,110.

If, like any other scam, the check would bounce and Don would be out $2,100.  

To the naked eye, it looks like a valid check.

But this is where it gets fishy - the check is signed by Elizabeth Garcia from the Thomas Jefferson Foundation.

We called the foundation and management said it has been fielding a bunch of calls like ours. 

The foundation denied that an Elizabeth Garcia works there or that the museum had any interest in the set of Chevy tires.  

Don never did cash the check and the buyer got angry.

"They even sent out emails to threaten me that I have their check and I didn't do anything with it and they're going to turn me in," said Don.

Emails to the buyer were not returned. 

As for Don, he plans to file a complaint with the state Attorney General's Office and has since sold the tires for a fair and square $300.
