Feedback: Massena Hospital Using New Building to Recruit Doctors

Recruiting doctors to any rural North Country hospital can often be a difficult process.

But, not only can finding primary care physicians to set up a practice be a challenge, but keeping them once they are here is just as hard.

"The immediate and long term survival of this hospital will depend on our ability to attract new primary care physicians and some specialty physicians to our medical staff," said hospital Chief Executive Officer Charles Fahd.

Massena Memorial Hospital officials broke ground for a $4 million new medical office building.

"Close proximity of this medical office building to the hospital is crucial not only to the practitioners, but also to our patients and to our staff," said Ancillary Services Director Mark Brouillette.

The new medical building won't cost taxpayers a dime as it is being fully paid for through hospital reserves.

When it opens for business next spring, the state of the art office building will be a key tool for physician recruitment and retention.

Once completed, nearly a dozen doctors, including the hospital's surgical group, will be able to fill the top floor with family practices.

The building will also have a sunlit atrium and large waiting room as well as a conference room and laboratory.

Construction is expected to get underway within the next couple of weeks with the new medical complex open for business by next April.
