Feedback: Massena Snake Sighted Again

Massena police have fielded half a dozen telephone calls in recent days from village residents, who report seeing a large snake.

The latest sighting was Monday, when Chelsey Hubbard, 12, was out for a walk in the woods at the end of Dana Street. She stumbled across what she described as "a really big snake" on a pile of brush.

"I saw something move," she said. "I thought it was a squirrel or something, so I looked in the bushes and saw a snake. It was curled up with its head up and tongue out."

The snake Chelsey saw is believed to be the same snake that has remained at large since originally being sighted on Marie Street over a week ago.

The snake is estimated as 4 to 5 feet long and four inches thick. Officials suspect the snake is a Boa Constrictor and not venemous.

Police are trying to sort out the sitings.

"It's a real challenge to try to sdecipher through what are actual sightings and peoples' imaginations," said Timmy Currier, village police chief.

Regardless, Gary Paradis isn't taking any chances.Paradis now carries a pitch fork while walking the paths near his home on Dana Street.

"I look all around," Paradis said.

Paradis said a family member's small dog was startled near the woods a few days ago, near the area where the snake has been seen.
