Feedback: New York Rolls Out Insurance Exchange

North country folks who need health and dental insurance will be able to enroll in plans this fall.

The New York Health Benefit Exchange has listed health and dental plans for people and small business owners that will be available for enrollment starting October 1 and coverage beginning next year.

The exchange is expected to help enroll 1.1 million uninsured New Yorkers and includes subsidies for those who meet certain income thresholds.

It has also changed its name to "NY State of Health."

"This organized marketplace will be out there designed to help people shop for and enroll in health insurance coverage," said Todd Muscatello, Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield Vice President of Sales.

The options that you can choose depend on where you live.

People in Jefferson County can compare between American Progressive, Blue Cross Blue Shield and MVP.

In St. Lawrence County, substitute Fidelis for American Progressive.

In Lewis County, all 4 will be available for comparison.

So that they can understand everything that they need to do in order to get ready for January 1, small business owners are coming to the Greater Watertown-North Country Chamber of Commerce to take advantage of the Small Business Assistance Program.

"That program gives us weekly updates of what is going on and that we can share with our members," said Lynn Pietroski of the chamber.

While the state officials say the marketplace can help, individuals and business owners don't have to use it.

"They can continue to purchase just as they do today," said Muscatello.

That means nobody will be forced to change their provider.

The exchange has been established under the Affordable Care Act, known to many as "Obamacare."

The 16 health and 10 dental plans that will be offered in the state are listed on an interactive map showing counties where they're available.

The department has also posted an online calculator for estimating eligibility for tax credits.
