Feedback: North Country Reacts To Health Care Ruling

It was a historic decision - the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the critical piece of the Affordable Care Act which requires all Americans to have health insurance.

Locally, reaction to the ruling was mixed.

The North County Children's Clinic is applauding the decision.

"This will get more people into the primary care so they can get screenings, so they have a primary care doctor who will understand the individual and how they look when they're healthy and how they look when they're not so healthy," said Aileen Martin, executive director of the North Country Children's Clinic.

7 News spoke with more than a dozen people outside the Post Office in Watertown.

One man told us that he thinks everyone should have insurance like he does.

"They want insurance no matter where you go today.  If you haven't got it, I don't know what to tell you," said William Granger, who supports the ruling.

But we spoke with plenty of people who strongly disagree.

"I think it's another example of intrusion in our lives by big government," said Jack Freislich, who opposes the ruling.

The Supreme Court did strike down one part of the Affordable Care Act, which made Medicaid available to more people.

Now the question is whether the health care overhaul will work as planned.

In New York, health officials are working on plans to help extend coverage to more than 2 million New Yorkers without it.
