Feedback: What's Going On With That Land In Lowville?For 24 years, Patricia Dosztan's home on Shady Avenue in Lowville backed up to a big, empty lot filled with trees. Not anymore. "They started tearing up the trees and everything else that harbored wildlife in the backyard," she said. "I was wondering what was going on in the backyard." The seven acres are owned by Joseph Virkler. He declined an on-camera interview, but says his company, V.S. Virkler and Son, has owned most of the land for decades and recently began clearing the land simply to get a better look at it. But Virkler has run into trouble. The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is investigating whether or not Virkler got a storm water permit. "There's potential for water to run off and pollute a stream of waters of New York state," said the DEC's Stephen Litwhiler. The DEC has not ordered work to stop, so Virkler will continue clearing when the weather clears up. Virkler says while he has no immediate plans for development, it looks as if it might be good for housing. Dosztan says she likes that idea. "You need progress and I'm not going to stop it." But the mystery still isn't solved for Dosztan and her neighbors. The land isn't zoned for housing and Virkler says he's open to other options.
