Finley Adds His Name To Russell Challengers

An eight-time member of the United States bobsled team is the latest candidate to enter the race for the 116th Assembly District seat currently held by Democrat Addie Russell.

Russ Finley, a longtime Lisbon beef farmer and real estate broker, told 7 News Thursday morning he would run for the River District Assembly seat as a Conservative.

The 49 year old Finley was on the Olympic bobsled team in the 1980s and early 90s.

Finley, who is an opponent of New York's gun control laws, says he also opposes the state's push for Common Core standards, teacher evaluations and Gov. Andrew Cuomo's plan to give state inmates a free college education.

Finley says the race isn't about Russell's vulnerabilities, but about what needs to be changed in Albany to help constituents in the district.

"This is about a time when people should have choices, people should have options," he said, "and it's about time that we put people and policy over party and principle."

Republicans John Humphrey and Cape Vincent Town Councilman John Byrne have also announced plans to run against Russell.
