Fire Closes West Carthage Highway

A house fire shut down part of North Broad Street in the village of West Carthage for about an hour and a half Tuesday morning.

The fire started shortly before 10 a.m. at 31 North Broad Street. No people were home, but three pets, a dog, a cat and a bird died in the blaze.

North Broad Street -- which is also State Route 26 -- was closed from State Route 126 to Bridge Street.

Five departments responded to the call and were able to get the fire under control in time to reopen the road around noon.

"We had a quick knockdown onto it, our interior attack got it knocked down relatively quickly," West Carthage fire incident commander Gary Friot said. "Within 30 minutes, it was under control."

Fire officials aren't sure of the cause, but did say it appears the fire might have started underneath the house.
