Fish Island Park Ribbon Cutting, Dedication

Seven years after community members first started working toward the dream of opening it, community leaders officially cut the ribbon on the New Fish Island Park in Dexter Saturday afternoon.

It's a public-private partnership, meant to be a place for everyone to enjoy.

The ammenities, including picnic areas, exercise equipment, a pavilion, and fishing and boating access points, are all handicap accessible, and make Fish Island truly a community center.

"It allows families to come here and enjoy themselves; it's fully accessible so our Wounded Warriors, the disabled, and those who just don't get around as well as they used to - this is a fantastic space for them to come and enjoy the wonderful outdoor beauty," said Addie Russell (D-118th Assembly District), one of many local dignitaries to attend the ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony.

The new Fish Island Park was originally dreamed up by former Mayor Donald Grant. He secured the state and federal funding that paid for many of the improvements.

The rest of the improvements were made possible by donations from community members.
