A former business manager of Highland Nursing Home in Massena was sentenced Wednesday to probation after admitting she stole $18,000 from residents.

Wendy Vice pleaded guilty to petit larceny in September. She was sentenced in Massena village court to three years' probation, which includes getting counseling for a gambling problem.

She admitted to diverting funds for her own use in 2011 and 2012.

In announcing the sentence, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said residents of nursing homes "entrust a great deal of control of their lives -- physically, financially and emotionally -- to the staff members of these facilities, who are obligated to honor that trust."

Schneiderman said other nursing home officials discovered the theft and reported it. Vice admitted the theft and repaid over $10,000. The nursing home reimbursed all the patients whose money was stolen.
