Fort Drum Focusing On Suicide Prevention

Army soldiers will put aside their duties tomorrow for a "stand down" to focus on suicide prevention.

Fort Drum officials say battlefield stress and even financial and legal problems can lead to behavioral health issues.

The new emphasis on prevention even has Fort Drum's commander appearing on the division's Facebook page in a public service announcement.

The overall message is soldiers should never hesitate to ask for help.

"There is no longer the stigma that was attached previously that it's going to be a career-ender," said Lieutenant Colonel Christian Meko, 10th Mountain Division Surgeon.

The Army is the largest of the armed services and has the highest number of suicides.
