Fort Drum Soldier Dies In Afghanistan


A Fort Drum soldier died in Afghanistan over the weekend.

Department of Defense officials say 21 year old Pfc. Mariano Raymundo of Houston, Texas, died June 1, in Sharan, Afghanistan.

He was a wheeled-vehicle mechanic with the 210th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

Raymundo joined the Army in November 2011. After completing training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he was assigned to Fort Jackson, South Carolina and arrived at Fort Drum in May 2012.

Raymundo deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in January 2013.

Raymundo's awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, a Certificate of Achievement, and the Driver and Mechanic Badge and Mechanic Bar. 

Raymundo is survived by his mother and father.

The incident is under investigation. No other details were released.
